初一双语2班最佳辩手郭语冰说到:“Debating is a very good way to practice our logic and thinking. It has a high requirement for memory and knowledge. I think everyone can join debating.”

比赛结束后初二双语1班李振钰同学谈到:“We did what we capable of and we won. At first, when we got this topic, we thought it was easy but when we were working on it, we found out that it was not that easy. We had to overcome both language and the fear in our heart. ”

最后让人意外的是,初二双语班的同学获得了本场辩论的胜利,陈易卓同学感慨道:“Luckily, we got some important facts, such as obesity and nutrition. We also mentioned food is culture and things about China’s long history to make sure we didn’t miss any of the good statements. Besides, it’s not only a debate about food, but also about team wrok and belief. ”

I am so proud and so surprised that I can be the best debater of this semester.

To be a good debater, it’s not a easy thing. You have to prepare your draft carefully and think about all the questions that the opposite team might ask. You can use your computers and phones to finish this step. I prefer an app which called “Zhihu”. In Zhihu, you can find some useful opinions about any topics. You can get a lot of ideas from it.

When you go on th stage and start debating, you can’t win even you have perfect first draft but without confidence. If people see any debater who talks without fluency, their first impression will get worse and worse, so before you start debating, you should practice it in front of the mirror many times. I hope my advice can help you.”

This term we focused on debating as a great way to introduce team work and competition to motivate students to research and write about a variety of topics and investigate, acknowledge and value the perspectives of different people.

Students have informally debated; Aliens Are Real, Girls Only Education, Cats vs Dogs, AI is a Good Thing, Pizza is Healthy,  Devices at School.

Each class has improved at quoting facts and opinions, speaking clearly and using devices to research their arguments. The two biggest improvements are team work and editing written work.

Students have recently watched the film The Great Debaters which is based upon the 1935 story of Wiley College, a small Negro school from Texas who in 1937 beat Harvard College and remained unbeaten for 10 years.  During this story students have examined American Civil Rights and written a short news style article about the historic debate.

Students are finishing the debate unit this term by investigating the morals in three nursery rhymes (Jack and the Beanstalk, Puss in Boots, From the Elephant Pit) and discussing the ethics of the characters behaviours.
